Know about

What is GERD?

What is GERD

What is GERD?

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the food pipe (esophagus). This acid irritation can cause heartburn, chest burning, sour taste in the mouth, or throat discomfort. GERD often worsens after meals, at night, or when lying down.

It is commonly caused by weakness of the valve (LES) between the stomach and the food pipe. In some cases, a hiatal hernia (part of the stomach moving into the chest) also contributes to reflux.

If untreated, GERD can lead to chronic inflammation, esophagitis, voice changes, chronic cough, asthma-like symptoms, or Barrett’s esophagus. Early diagnosis and proper management are important to prevent long-term complications.

Diagnostic Methods for GERD Evaluation

Diagnosis usually begins with a clinical assessment of symptoms and medical history. Depending on severity, the following tests may be recommended:
These tests guide in choosing the most suitable medical or surgical treatment for GERD.

How is GERD Treated?

Depending on the patient’s need and the problem, GERD treatment can be done in different ways:
Medical Treatment

Medical Treatment

Most patients improve with medications (acid reducers, antacids) and lifestyle modifications such as weight control, smaller meals, and avoiding late-night eating.

Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Surgery

Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Surgery

A minimally invasive keyhole procedure that strengthens the valve to prevent acid from flowing back, offering long-term relief for patients who do not respond adequately to medication.

Robotic Anti-Reflux Surgery

Robotic Anti-Reflux Surgery

An advanced precision technique where surgical instruments are controlled robotically for accurate valve repair, especially useful in severe, recurrent, or hiatal-hernia–associated GERD. This approach ensures less pain, minimal scarring, faster recovery, and a more durable repair.

Why Robotic Anti-Reflux Surgery is Better Than Traditional Methods

Why Robotic Anti Reflux Surgery is Better Than Traditional Methods
Robotic anti-reflux surgery is a modern and highly precise technique used to strengthen the valve between the stomach and food pipe, reducing the backflow of acid. In this method, the surgeon controls robotic instruments with very high precision, providing better accuracy than the human hand. This allows gentle tissue handling, accurate valve reconstruction, and more stable long-term control of reflux.

For patients, the major advantages include less pain, smaller cuts, and faster recovery, helping them return to normal routine sooner. This approach is especially beneficial for working professionals, business owners, travelers, and individuals who prefer minimal downtime.

Smart Procedures

Technologies Commonly Used in GERD Reflux Treatment

UGIE

Endoscopic evaluation of esophagus.

UGIE

Endoscope is a small tube with camera passed down the food-pipe to examine the inner linings of food-pipe & stomach. It can also detect the valve & the hiatal hernia. The procedure takes 5 minutes.

24-hr pH-Metry

Continuous acid exposure measurement.

24-hr pH-Metry

pH metry is a test in which a probe is placed down the food pipe to monitor acid reflux. It has to be performed for 24 hours. After the completion of the test, the readings are taken and a score is generated which helps the GERD specialist understand the quantity & quality of acid reflux.

Manometry

Measures esophageal muscle function.

Manometry
Manometry is a test in which a small probe is passed into food pipe. The probe is connected to the computer software. The operator will ask the patient to swallow few sips of water during the procedure.

This will create few graphs inside the computer. The graph will depict the pressure generated within the food pipe & hence the problems with the function of the food-pipe & the valve.

Robotic Fundoplication Surgery

Robotic reinforcement of sphincter.

Robotic Fundoplication Surgery 1
The concept of surgery is to recreate a valve around the lower esophagus in order to tighten to loose valve & correct the hiatal hernia. Various surgical procedures are as follows: Nissen Fundoplication, Toupet Fundoplication, Dorr Fundoplication.

What is Robotic Anti-Reflux Surgery and How It Benefits GERD Patients?

Robotic anti-reflux surgery is a minimally invasive procedure where the surgeon controls precise robotic instruments with a 3D high-definition view, allowing more accurate and delicate movements than manual surgery.

For GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), this approach strengthens the valve between the stomach and food pipe to prevent acid from flowing upward. It offers less pain, smaller cuts, faster recovery, and lower chances of reflux returning, helping patients resume normal activities sooner and with greater comfort.

Types of Robotic Anti-Reflux Procedures

Depending on the patient’s GERD severity, valve function, and presence of hiatal hernia, robotic surgery may be performed in different ways:
Robotic Fundoplication (Valve Strengthening)

Robotic Fundoplication (Valve Strengthening)

In this procedure, the weakened valve at the lower esophagus is reconstructed and tightened using robotic precision. This prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the food pipe. Most patients experience significant relief from heartburn and can return to daily routine with improved digestion and less reflux.

Robotic Hiatal Hernia Repair (If Hiatal Hernia is Present)

Robotic Hiatal Hernia Repair (If Hiatal Hernia is Present)

Some GERD patients have a hiatal hernia, where part of the stomach moves up into the chest. This surgery repositions the stomach back to its normal place and strengthens the diaphragm opening. Robotic control allows accurate and secure repair, improving breathing, swallowing, and reflux control.

Robotic Partial Fundoplication (Tailored Approach)

Robotic Partial Fundoplication (Tailored Approach)

For selected patients who require a gentler valve tightening, a partial wrap is performed to maintain normal ability to swallow while still reducing reflux. This approach is customized based on manometry and reflux test results.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

GERD is treated by a Gastro surgeon or GERD specialist. They are trained to diagnose reflux disease and provide medical management as well as laparoscopic or robotic anti-reflux surgery when needed.

You should consult a doctor if you have persistent heartburn, acidity, sour taste, burning in the chest, lump-in-throat feeling, or reflux at night, especially if it continues for more than 2–3 weeks.

Doctors usually confirm GERD through a physical evaluation and may recommend endoscopy, pH monitoring, or esophageal tests to understand the severity before planning treatment.

Robotic surgery offers high precision and better valve reconstruction with gentle tissue handling. This results in less pain, smaller cuts, faster recovery, and more reliable long-term relief from reflux compared to traditional methods.

It is recommended when GERD symptoms continue despite medication, or when reflux affects daily life, sleep, or the throat/voice. It is also suitable for patients with hiatal hernia or those wishing to avoid long-term drug dependence.
