Robotic Transanal minimally invasive surgery for rectal neoplasms A systematic review of outcomes and innovations.

Doctors are always looking for ways to treat rectal tumors with less invasive surgery and faster recovery. One newer technique is called robotic transanal minimally invasive surgery (robotic TAMIS). In this procedure, surgeons remove tumors through the anus using robotic tools, avoiding large abdominal incisions.
A recent review looked at 26 clinical studies involving more than 1,200 patients treated with robotic TAMIS. The results were encouraging.
About 89% of cancerous tumors were completely removed, meaning no cancer was left behind at the edges of the tissue. The chance of the cancer returning in the same area was around 8% after about two years of follow-up.
Newer robotic systems have also made the surgery easier for doctors to perform.

Advanced single-port robotic tools improved precision and reduced operation time by about 22%. Compared with traditional minimally invasive techniques, robotic TAMIS had fewer cases where surgeons had to switch to a different operation.
This approach may be especially useful for early-stage rectal cancers or complex non-cancerous tumors, helping patients avoid more extensive surgery.

However, researchers say more studies are needed to understand long-term survival and costs. For now, robotic TAMIS is best performed in specialized centers with experienced surgical teams.
