Men having robotic surgery to treat prostate cancer sometimes also have an inguinal hernia—a small bulge near the groin area.

It’s a common problem, and surgeons often discover it before or during the operation.

This study looked at whether it’s safe to fix the hernia during the same surgery.

Researchers reviewed 20 studies with over 21,000 patients. About 1,400 had both surgeries done at once, and the rest had only the prostate surgery.

Here’s what they found: doing both surgeries together made the operation a little longer—by about 30 minutes. But it didn’t cause more complications, more bleeding, or longer hospital stays. Only a small number of hernias came back later.

This means that for many men, fixing a hernia during prostate surgery can be safe. It can also prevent the need for another surgery later on, saving time, stress, and cost.

Doctors say this approach may be best for certain patients and when the hospital has experience doing both procedures together.

If you’re planning prostate surgery and have a hernia, talk to your care team about whether both can be done at the same time.
