Many people suffer from acid reflux, also known as heartburn. It causes a burning feeling in the chest and throat.

While it’s common to manage this with over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, new research shows that some people may be missing a bigger health risk.

This study asked over 18,000 people in the Netherlands about their symptoms and how they deal with them. Nearly half of the people who responded said they had reflux symptoms. More than half of those had never seen a doctor about it. Many were treating it on their own with OTC medications like antacids.

But here’s the concern: about 11% of these people actually met the medical guidelines to get checked for more serious conditions like Barrett’s esophagus or esophageal cancer. Because they didn’t see a doctor, they were never screened.

This means people at risk could be going undiagnosed. Reflux can sometimes damage the lining of the esophagus. Over time, that damage can turn into a more serious problem. Doctors recommend screening in certain cases to catch changes early.

If you have regular reflux or heartburn, talk to your doctor—especially if it happens often or you’ve been treating it yourself for a long time. It might be more than just heartburn.
