Twenty-year temporal trends, risk profiles, and prognostic value of clinicopathological features in gallbladder cancer following cholecystectomy.DOI 10.3748wjg.v32.i7.111478

Gallbladder cancer is rare but very aggressive. It is often discovered late, sometimes after surgery to remove the gallbladder for other reasons. A new study looked at 20 years of data from more than 15,000 gallbladder surgeries to better understand who is at higher risk and what affects survival.
Out of all the patients studied, 285 people were diagnosed with gallbladder cancer after their gallbladder was removed. Researchers noticed that the number of gallbladder cancer cases gradually increased over the two decades.
The study found that people with gallbladder cancer were usually older and more likely to have other health issues like high blood pressure or inflammation of the bile ducts (cholangitis).
Blood test results also showed differences. Patients with gallbladder cancer often had lower levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and albumin. Interestingly, patients with higher levels of these markers tended to live longer after diagnosis.
Tumor features also mattered. Larger tumors, certain aggressive cell types, and a pattern called tumor budding were linked to more advanced disease and poorer outcomes.
These findings highlight the importance of identifying people at higher risk and carefully examining gallbladder tissue after surgery. Early detection and better understanding of risk factors may help improve survival in this challenging cancer.
