New Hope for Bile Duct and Gallbladder Cancer After Surgery1

A new study brings encouraging news for patients with bile duct cancer (called extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma) and gallbladder cancer. After surgery, many patients worry about the cancer coming back. This study tested a combination of treatments to help lower that risk.

Patients in the study had surgery to remove their cancer. Then, half of them received extra treatment. This included immunotherapy (a drug called camrelizumab), chemotherapy (capecitabine), and radiotherapy. The other half did not get any treatment unless the cancer came back.

After 3 years, survival was much better in the group that got treatment. About 58% of those who had the combination treatment were still alive after 3 years, compared to only 30% in the group that did not receive further treatment. These patients were also more likely to stay cancer-free for longer.

The treatment was safe. Most patients finished their therapy, and there were no treatment-related deaths. Only a few needed to delay one of the medicines.

This study shows that adding immunotherapy and chemoradiation after surgery can help people with these rare but serious cancers live longer. If you or a loved one has had surgery for bile duct or gallbladder cancer, talk to your doctor. This treatment may be an option, or it could be available through a clinical trial.
