Many people have gallstones and don’t even know it. These are called silent or asymptomatic gallstones. They are often found during scans done for other reasons. Most people feel fine and have no pain.A large study looked at what happens to these silent gallstones over time. It followed more than 25,000 people. The results give a clear picture. After 5 years, about 1 in 10 people developed symptoms. After 10 years, this increased to about 2 in 10. By 15 years, around 1 in 4 people started having problems. This means most people will not develop symptoms quickly.Symptoms can include pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, or complications like infection. Still, many people remain symptom-free for years. The study also found some risk factors. People who drink alcohol regularly had a higher chance of developing symptoms. High cholesterol levels also increased the risk. This means lifestyle plays a role. Some factors lowered the risk. Men were less likely to develop symptoms. What does this mean for you?
If you have silent gallstones, you may not need surgery right away.  This avoids unnecessary procedures. Surgery may be considered if symptoms appear or if you have higher risk.
Simple steps can help:
⦿ Maintain a healthy weight
⦿ Control cholesterol levels
⦿ Limit alcohol intake
⦿ Follow regular medical check-ups
Early awareness helps you stay prepared. If you notice pain or digestive issues, seek medical advice quickly.
