Sometimes, harmless tumors can look just like cancer. That’s what happened to a young man with a rare condition involving his gallbladder and bile duct. He came to the hospital with pain in the upper right side of his belly, yellow skin (jaundice), and pale stools. These symptoms usually suggest something serious, like cancer.

Scans showed changes in his gallbladder and bile duct that looked like two cancers at once. Doctors thought he might have gallbladder cancer and bile duct cancer. Because of this, he had a big surgery to remove parts of his liver, pancreas, and intestine.

But the final lab tests after surgery told a different story. He didn’t have cancer. Instead, he had a rare kind of benign tumor called a neurofibroma. These grow from nerve tissue and are not dangerous. They are very rare in the gallbladder and bile duct, and this was the first time both places were affected at the same time.

This case shows how hard it can be to tell the difference between a rare tumor and cancer. The report suggests using a quick test during surgery (called a frozen section) to avoid major operations if the tumor isn’t cancer.

Patients with unusual scan results should know that not all serious-looking tumors are cancer. In rare cases, they may be harmless, and doctors can take steps during surgery to double-check before removing too much.
