Combined Radiation and Chemotherapy May Improve Symptom Relief in Esophageal Cancer

Simultaneous integrated boost intensity-modulated radiotherapy with or without in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma phase III clinicalDOI 10.1

Some patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cannot have surgery because the cancer is too advanced or located in a difficult area. For these patients, radiation therapy is often the main treatment. A new clinical trial looked at whether adding chemotherapy to modern radiation therapy could improve results.

The study compared two approaches. One group received advanced radiation therapy alone, called SIB-RT (simultaneous integrated boost intensity-modulated radiotherapy). The other group received the same radiation combined with chemotherapy.

The results showed that patients receiving both treatments had a better response to therapy. About 70% of patients improved with the combined treatment, compared with about 54% with radiation alone.

Patients receiving the combination also experienced greater relief from swallowing problems, one of the most difficult symptoms of esophageal cancer.

Long-term survival was similar between the two groups, but the combined treatment caused more side effects, including nausea and lower white blood cell counts.

Overall, the study suggests that radiation remains the key treatment, and adding chemotherapy may improve tumor response and symptom relief for patients who cannot undergo surgery.
