Exercise After Colon Cancer Treatment Helps Patients Live Longer

Exercise is more than just good for the heart. A new study shows it can also help people with colon cancer live longer and stay cancer-free for more years.

Researchers followed 889 patients with colon cancer who had surgery and chemotherapy. Half of them joined a 3-year exercise program. The other half only received health education materials. The exercise group did structured physical activity, designed to be safe and sustainable.

The results were strong. After 5 years, 80% of the patients in the exercise group were alive without cancer coming back, compared to 74% in the education-only group. After 8 years, 90% of the exercise group were alive, compared to 83% in the other group. This means exercise added clear survival benefits.

There were some side effects. Patients in the exercise group reported more muscle and joint problems than those who only had education. Still, most patients were able to continue the program.

The study shows that exercise should be seen as a part of recovery, not just as an optional activity. Even after cancer treatment, staying active can play an important role in reducing the chance of recurrence and in helping people live longer.

This research gives hope and motivation to colon cancer survivors. With guidance from doctors, a safe and structured exercise program may help patients improve both survival and quality of life.
