Aspirin Shows Promise for Certain Colon Cancer Patients

A study looked at whether aspirin can help people with a specific type of colon cancer live longer without their cancer coming back. The trial focused on patients with stage II and III colon cancer who carry a genetic change called a PIK3CA mutation.

Researchers gave one group of patients a low dose of aspirin (100 mg) every day for three years. Another group received a placebo (a pill with no active medicine). The trial included 112 patients, but it had to stop early because of financial limits. Patients were followed for about four years.

The results showed that people taking aspirin were less likely to see their cancer return compared to those taking placebo. After five years, about 87 out of 100 patients on aspirin were still cancer-free, compared to 73 out of 100 patients on placebo. No serious side effects from aspirin were reported.

Even though the study ended early and results were not strong enough to be called “statistically proven,” the findings suggest that aspirin may help protect patients with this specific type of colon cancer. Doctors may now consider aspirin as an option for certain patients, but more research is needed before it becomes standard care.

This trial is the first of its kind to give clear evidence that aspirin might help people with colon cancer linked to the PIK3CA mutation. Patients should always speak with their doctor before starting aspirin, as it may not be safe for everyone.
