Eating more plant-based foods may help protect your liver. A new study from Singapore looked at the diets of over 63,000 people for nearly 18 years. It found that those who ate mostly healthy plant-based foods had a lower chance of getting liver cancer.

The study looked at two types of plant-based diets. One was a healthy version, full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. The other was an unhealthy version, with more refined grains, sugary foods, and processed plant-based items. The researchers found that people who followed the healthy version had a lower risk of liver cancer. People who ate the unhealthy version did not get the same benefit.

The study did not focus on people who were fully vegetarian or vegan. Instead, it looked at how much of their food came from plants compared to animal sources. The results were clear—more healthy plant foods meant a lower risk of liver cancer.

This is good news for people who want to take simple steps to stay healthy. Swapping red meat and processed snacks for fresh fruits, greens, and grains could protect your liver. It’s especially helpful in places where liver cancer is common.

Eating well can be a powerful way to lower cancer risk. This study shows that not all plant-based foods are equal. The quality of the plant foods you eat matters.
