Nutrition Before Cancer Treatment Can Improve Recovery

Patients with stomach, pancreas, or colon cancer often face tough treatments and surgery. Many are already malnourished before treatment begins, which makes recovery harder. A new study looked at whether improving nutrition before treatment—a strategy called dietary prehabilitation—could help.

The review analyzed 12 studies that tested different nutrition plans before surgery. These included oral nutritional supplements and special immune-boosting formulas called immunonutrition.

The results showed that patients who followed a structured nutrition plan before treatment had fewer complications after surgery and were more likely to maintain or improve their nutritional status. The benefits were strongest in patients who were malnourished at the start.

Better nutrition before treatment also helped patients recover faster, with some studies showing a shorter hospital stay and improved quality of life. This suggests that preparing the body with the right nutrients can make a real difference in how patients handle surgery and treatment.

For patients facing surgery for gastric, pancreatic, or colorectal cancer, doctors may recommend starting a nutrition plan as early as possible. Even simple steps, like taking prescribed supplements, can support better recovery.
