Frequently asked questions

Who performs anti-reflux surgery in Ahmedabad?

Dr Harsh Shah, MS, MCh (Surgical Gastroenterology), DrNB (Surgical Gastroenterology), performs laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery for GERD at Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, Vasna, Ahmedabad. Consultations are at Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, Vasna, Ahmedabad.

What is laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery?

The upper stomach is wrapped around the lower food pipe through small ports to rebuild the valve that normally stops acid rising into the oesophagus.

When is surgery advised for GERD?

Surgery is considered when reflux persists despite full-dose acid-suppressing medicine, when the patient does not want lifelong tablets, or when a large hiatus hernia is present.

Is a hiatus hernia repaired at the same time?

Yes. The stomach is returned to the abdomen and the widened opening in the diaphragm is closed and reinforced during the same operation, before the wrap is made.

How long is recovery after anti-reflux surgery?

Most patients go home in two to three days, take soft food for two weeks, and return to desk work within one to two weeks. Heavy lifting waits about six weeks.

Can reflux come back after fundoplication?

Reflux control is durable in most patients. A wrap can loosen or a hiatus hernia can recur over years, and a small number of people need acid-suppressing medicine again.

Know about

What is GERD?

What is GERD

What is GERD?

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the food pipe (esophagus). This acid irritation can cause heartburn, chest burning, sour taste in the mouth, or throat discomfort. GERD often worsens after meals, at night, or when lying down.

It is commonly caused by weakness of the valve (LES) between the stomach and the food pipe. In some cases, a hiatal hernia (part of the stomach moving into the chest) also contributes to reflux.

If untreated, GERD can lead to chronic inflammation, esophagitis, voice changes, chronic cough, asthma-like symptoms, or Barrett’s esophagus. Early diagnosis and proper management are important to prevent long-term complications.

Diagnostic Methods for GERD Evaluation

Diagnosis usually begins with a clinical assessment of symptoms and medical history. Depending on severity, the following tests may be recommended:
These tests guide in choosing the most suitable medical or surgical treatment for GERD.

How is GERD Treated?

Depending on the patient’s need and the problem, GERD treatment can be done in different ways:
Medical Treatment

Medical Treatment

Most patients improve with medications (acid reducers, antacids) and lifestyle modifications such as weight control, smaller meals, and avoiding late-night eating.

Smart Procedures

Technologies Commonly Used in GERD Reflux Treatment

UGIE

Endoscopic evaluation of esophagus.

UGIE

Endoscope is a small tube with camera passed down the food-pipe to examine the inner linings of food-pipe & stomach. It can also detect the valve & the hiatal hernia. The procedure takes 5 minutes.

24-hr pH-Metry

Continuous acid exposure measurement.

24-hr pH-Metry

pH metry is a test in which a probe is placed down the food pipe to monitor acid reflux. It has to be performed for 24 hours. After the completion of the test, the readings are taken and a score is generated which helps the GERD specialist understand the quantity & quality of acid reflux.

Manometry

Measures esophageal muscle function.

Manometry
Manometry is a test in which a small probe is passed into food pipe. The probe is connected to the computer software. The operator will ask the patient to swallow few sips of water during the procedure.

This will create few graphs inside the computer. The graph will depict the pressure generated within the food pipe & hence the problems with the function of the food-pipe & the valve.

Laparoscopic Fundoplication

Keyhole reinforcement of the valve.

Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Surgery
The concept of surgery is to recreate a valve around the lower esophagus in order to tighten to loose valve & correct the hiatal hernia. Various surgical procedures are as follows: Nissen Fundoplication, Toupet Fundoplication, Dorr Fundoplication.

Laparoscopic Surgery

What is Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Surgery and How Does It Help?

Laparoscopic Surgery

What is Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Surgery and How Does It Help?

Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery is keyhole surgery. The surgeon works through small ports with a high-definition camera and slim instruments, watching a magnified view on a monitor.

For GERD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease), the operation rebuilds the valve between the stomach and food pipe so acid cannot flow upward. Most patients have less pain, small scars and a quick return to normal activities, and many can stop or reduce acid medicines.

Types of Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Procedures

Depending on the patient’s GERD severity, valve function, and presence of hiatal hernia, laparoscopic surgery may be performed in different ways:
GERD Anti-reflux surgery for acidity

Laparoscopic Fundoplication (Valve Strengthening)

The weakened valve at the lower end of the food pipe is rebuilt by wrapping the top of the stomach around it, through small keyhole ports. This stops stomach acid flowing back into the food pipe. Most patients get clear relief from heartburn and return to their daily routine within days.

Hiatal Hernia–Associated Reflux

Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia Repair (If Hiatal Hernia is Present)

Some GERD patients have a hiatal hernia, where part of the stomach moves up into the chest. This keyhole operation returns the stomach to the abdomen and narrows the widened opening in the diaphragm with stitches, improving reflux, chest discomfort and swallowing.

Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Surgery

Laparoscopic Partial Fundoplication (Tailored Approach)

For selected patients who require a gentler valve tightening, a partial wrap is performed to maintain normal ability to swallow while still reducing reflux. This approach is customized based on manometry and reflux test results.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

GERD is treated by a Gastro surgeon or GERD specialist. They are trained to diagnose reflux disease and provide medical management as well as laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery when needed.

You should consult a doctor if you have persistent heartburn, acidity, sour taste, burning in the chest, lump-in-throat feeling, or reflux at night, especially if it continues for more than 2–3 weeks.

Doctors usually confirm GERD through a physical evaluation and may recommend endoscopy, pH monitoring, or esophageal tests to understand the severity before planning treatment.

It is recommended when GERD symptoms continue despite medication, or when reflux affects daily life, sleep, or the throat/voice. It is also suitable for patients with hiatal hernia or those wishing to avoid long-term drug dependence.

Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery in Gujarat is performed at Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, Vasna, Ahmedabad, where Dr Harsh Shah operates. Dr Harsh Shah, MS, MCh (Surgical Gastroenterology), DrNB (Surgical Gastroenterology), is a GI surgeon practising in Ahmedabad.

Look for formal training in surgical gastroenterology, a regular foregut operating list, and routine use of manometry and pH studies before surgery. Ask which wrap is proposed, whether the hiatus will be reinforced, and what happens if swallowing is difficult afterwards.

An upper GI endoscopy, a barium swallow, oesophageal manometry and 24-hour pH monitoring are usually done. Manometry decides whether a full or a partial wrap is safer, and pH testing confirms that the symptoms really are acid reflux.

Yes. Bring your endoscopy report, any barium swallow, manometry and pH study results, and the list of acid-suppressing medicines you have taken and for how long. A second surgical opinion at Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, Vasna, Ahmedabad, will say whether medicine or surgery suits your reflux.
