Recent research has shown that dietary vitamin C can significantly reduce the risk of digestive system cancers (DSCs), including cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and colon. This study reviewed 32 prospective studies involving over 1.6 million participants to understand the impact of vitamin C intake and blood levels on these cancers.

Key Findings

  • Reduced Cancer Risk: Higher dietary intake of vitamin C is associated with a lower risk of oral, pharyngeal, esophageal, gastric, and colon cancers.
  • Effective Doses: The most protective effects were seen with daily intakes of 250 mg for oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal cancers, and 65 mg for gastric cancer.
  • Blood Vitamin C Levels: Higher plasma vitamin C levels specifically reduce gastric cancer risk.

Conclusion
Increasing vitamin C intake through diet could play a significant role in reducing the incidence of several digestive system cancers. However, further large-scale clinical studies are necessary to confirm these findings.
