Talc is a mineral often used in everyday products like baby powder, cosmetics, and even some foods. However, recent research has raised concerns about its safety, particularly in relation to cancer. A group of experts from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reviewed the latest studies and concluded that talc is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” This means that while there is some evidence that talc could cause cancer, the results are not entirely clear, especially because it’s hard to rule out other factors like contamination with asbestos.

The focus is particularly on the use of talc-based body powders, which have been linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer. If you’ve used talc-based products, you may want to consider switching to alternatives and discussing any concerns with your doctor.

Acrylonitrile, on the other hand, is a chemical used in making plastics, rubber, and synthetic fabrics. It is classified as “carcinogenic to humans” by the IARC, meaning it is known to cause cancer, especially lung cancer, in people exposed to it regularly, such as workers in manufacturing industries. If you work in environments where acrylonitrile is present, it’s crucial to follow safety guidelines to minimize your exposure.

For most people, avoiding or reducing the use of talc-based products and being aware of chemical exposures in the workplace are practical steps to reduce cancer risks.
