What is Helicobacter pylori?
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that infects the stomach and is known to increase the risk of gastric cancer.

Key Findings from the Study
A recent study explored how genetic factors combined with H. pylori infection impact the risk of gastric cancer. Researchers found that certain genetic variants can significantly increase the risk when combined with H. pylori infection.

Genetic Factors
The study examined 27 genes known to predispose individuals to cancer. Pathogenic variants in nine genes (including BRCA1, BRCA2, and ATM) were associated with a higher risk of gastric cancer.

  • Individuals with both H. pylori infection and pathogenic genetic variants had a much higher risk of developing gastric cancer.
  • At 85 years of age, people with H. pylori infection and a pathogenic variant had a 45.5% cumulative risk of gastric cancer, compared to 14.4% for those infected with H. pylori but without the genetic variants.
