Recent research has found that gum disease might increase your risk of developing certain types of digestive system cancers. This study looked at over 16 million people and found that those with periodontal (gum) disease were more likely to develop cancers in the stomach, intestines, pancreas, and liver compared to those without gum disease.

The findings show that gum disease increases the risk of several cancers: esophageal cancer by 39%, stomach cancer by 13%, colon cancer by 21%, pancreatic cancer by 35%, and liver cancer by 9%. People with severe gum disease, especially periodontitis, which causes serious gum damage, had an even higher risk of these cancers.

This research highlights the importance of taking care of your oral health. Brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups can help prevent gum disease and, potentially, reduce your risk of developing these serious cancers.
