The relationship between gut bacteria and colorectal cancer (CRC) is becoming clearer. This research reviewed multiple studies to understand how bacteria in the gut, cancer treatments, and a patient’s genetics interact. It highlights how these factors influence cancer progression and treatment success.

Some bacteria, like Escherichia coli and Bacteroides fragilis, were linked to early colon cancer. Another type, Fusobacterium spp., was more common in growths called adenomas and contributed to inflammation in the gut. These harmful bacteria may make cancer harder to treat.

The study also showed that elderly patients with CRC responded to single-agent chemotherapy similarly to younger patients. Treatments like immunotherapy and targeted drugs (e.g., those targeting PD-1, BRAF, and MEK) were more successful when combined.

The gut microbiome, especially certain bacteria, plays a significant role in how well treatments work. Future cancer care may include methods to modify gut bacteria, making treatments more effective and improving patient outcomes.
