A recent study has highlighted the potential benefits of aspirin in reducing the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), particularly in people who have less healthy lifestyles. Researchers followed over 107,000 individuals for more than 30 years, examining how regular aspirin use affected CRC risk in relation to different lifestyle habits, such as diet, smoking, and physical activity.

Key Findings:

  • Who Benefits Most? The study found that people with higher risk factors (e.g., poor diet, smoking, high body mass index) experienced a more significant reduction in CRC risk when taking aspirin regularly. In contrast, those with healthier lifestyles also saw benefits, but the reduction in risk was less pronounced.
  • Aspirin Dosage: Regular aspirin use was defined as taking two or more standard tablets (325 mg) per week. The greatest reduction in CRC risk was seen in those with the unhealthiest lifestyle habits.
  • Importance of Lifestyle: While aspirin can help reduce the risk of CRC, maintaining a healthy lifestyle remains crucial. The study suggests that combining aspirin use with healthy habits can further reduce CRC risk.

Conclusion: If you have risk factors for colorectal cancer, such as a poor diet, smoking, or lack of physical activity, regular aspirin use might offer added protection. However, it’s essential to discuss with your healthcare provider whether aspirin is right for you, as it may not be suitable for everyone.
