IN SHORT

First decide the type: a medical gastroenterologist for medicines and endoscopy, a surgical gastroenterologist when an operation may be needed. Either can see you first.
Check the degrees: DM or DrNB in gastroenterology, or MCh or DrNB in surgical gastroenterology. Confirm the registration on the National Medical Commission register.
Choose a doctor who explains clearly, advises tests only when needed, tells you costs up front, and welcomes a second opinion before any operation.

Why does the choice matter?

Many digestive problems last for months or years. Acidity, fatty liver, colitis and gallstones all need a doctor you can return to and trust. The right specialist saves you repeated tests, wrong medicines and, sometimes, an operation you did not need.

This checklist does not tell you which doctor to choose. It gives you the questions to ask, so you can decide for yourself.

The checklist: eight things to look for

  1. The right type of specialist. A medical gastroenterologist treats with medicines and endoscopy. A surgical gastroenterologist also operates. If a scan has found gallstones, a hernia, a blockage or a growth, see a surgical gastroenterologist.
  2. Super-specialty degrees. Look for DM or DrNB (Gastroenterology), or MCh or DrNB (Surgical Gastroenterology). These come after a first MD or MS degree.
  3. A valid registration. Search the doctor’s name on the Indian Medical Register on the National Medical Commission website.
  4. Clear explanations. You should leave knowing the likely cause, the plan and the warning signs, in words you understand.
  5. Tests only when needed. A good doctor reads your old reports first and explains why each new test is needed.
  6. Costs told up front. The consultation fee, the cost of tests and, if needed, the cost of surgery and insurance cover should be explained before you decide.
  7. Hospital access. Ask where the doctor operates and where you would go in an emergency at night.
  8. Open to second opinions. Before any operation, you should feel free to take another opinion. A good doctor shares your reports without fuss.

Medical or surgical gastroenterologist: which type first?

For most stomach and bowel problems, either type can see you first. If a scan has found something that may need an operation, start with a surgical gastroenterologist.

Both types of specialist treat many of the same problems with medicines and diet. The difference is that a surgical gastroenterologist can also offer an operation when it is needed. Read the full comparison: medical vs surgical gastroenterologist.

How to check qualifications and registration

Degrees are usually printed on the doctor’s prescription pad and website. Use this table to read them:

DegreeWhat it means
MBBSBasic medical degree; every doctor has it
MD (Medicine)Specialist in general medicine; first step for a medical gastroenterologist
DM or DrNB (Gastroenterology)Super-specialist in medical gastroenterology
MS (General Surgery)Specialist general surgeon; first step for a surgical gastroenterologist
MCh or DrNB (Surgical Gastroenterology)Super-specialist in operations on the food pipe, stomach, intestine, liver, gallbladder and pancreas

To check registration, open the Indian Medical Register on the National Medical Commission website and search by name and state. A registered doctor will be listed with a registration number.

Questions to ask at the first visit

Write these down and take them with you. It is your right to ask:

  • What do you think is causing my problem?
  • Which tests do I need, and why? Can my old reports be used?
  • What are the treatment options, including not operating?
  • If I need surgery, where will it be done, and what will it cost?
  • Which warning signs mean I should go to hospital?
  • When should I come back?

Warning signs: do not wait to choose

If you have any of these, go to the nearest emergency department the same day, and choose your long-term doctor later:

  • Vomiting blood, or black, tar-like stools
  • Severe belly pain with a hard or swollen belly
  • Vomiting with no gas or stool passing
  • Yellow eyes with fever and shivering

Frequently asked questions

How can I check a doctor's registration?

Every doctor in India must be registered with a state medical council or the National Medical Commission. You can search the Indian Medical Register on the NMC website by the doctor's name.

Are online reviews a good way to choose?

They help a little. Read what patients say about how clearly the doctor explained things and how they were treated. Do not choose on star ratings alone.

Should I choose a doctor close to home?

For long-term problems, yes, it helps. You may need several visits. For an operation, the doctor's training and the hospital matter more than distance.

Is it all right to take a second opinion?

Yes. A second opinion is normal, especially before an operation. A good doctor will not mind, and will share your reports with you.

Medical or surgical gastroenterologist, which should I choose?

For most problems, either can see you first. If a scan has found gallstones, a blockage, a hernia or a growth, a surgical gastroenterologist is the natural first stop.
