Stomach Bacteria May Raise Risk of Liver and Gallbladder Cancer

H. pylori is a common bacteria that infects the stomach. It can cause ulcers and is linked to stomach cancer. New research now shows it may also increase the risk of cancer in the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts. These are called hepatobiliary cancers.

Scientists reviewed data from different studies. They found people with H. pylori had a higher risk of getting these cancers. The risk was more than double compared to those without the infection.

Researchers tested different body samples for H. pylori, like blood, liver tissue, and bile. Bile samples gave the clearest results. Patients with H. pylori in their bile were more likely to develop hepatobiliary cancer.

This research is important because these cancers are often found late, when treatment is harder. Knowing H. pylori could be a risk factor may help doctors check for it earlier. Treating the infection might reduce cancer risk.
