Frequently Asked Questions

  • The pancreas is an organ that produces hormones and juices that help break down food. When this organ gets irritated or swollen, this condition is known as Pancreatitis. The condition causes symptoms such as – pain that radiates to back, fever, bloating, nausea, vomiting etc.

  • Most people recover from it without any long-lasting effects, when the pancreatitis is mild. However, some people get very sick in the course of severe pancreatitis.

  • There are several causes of pancreatitis. however, most cases are caused by gallstones or alcohol abuse:

    • Gallstones – Gallstones are stones that form within an organ known as the gallbladder. both the pancreas and also the gallbladder drain into one tube. If that tube gets clogged by the stone, neither of the organs will drain. When that happens, the fluids from each organ accumulates & which may cause pain.
    • Alcohol abuse – those who drink an excessive amount of alcohol for too long generally get alcohol-related pancreatitis. People with this form of disease sometimes begin to feel pain one to three days after drinking plenty of alcohol.
    • Other causes of pancreatitis: High level of triglycerides in blood, high level of calcium in blood, trauma to pancreas, genetic cause, autoimmunity etc.
  • Blood tests – Lipase, Amylase

    CT Scan of the Abdomen

    MRI of the Abdomen

  • Acute Pancreatitis treatment is performed in a hospital setting except in a very mild case. There, the acute pancreatitis doctor can provide you with fluids and pain medicines to help you feel better. If you can’t eat, they can provide you with food through a tube.

Some people may get an infection, which might be treated with antibiotics. Alternative possible issues caused are fluid build-up around the exocrine gland or organ failure. Fluid build-up around the pancreas usually goes away on its own, however, if it does not resolve then it must be drained or treated with acute pancreatitis pain management & acute pancreatitis treatment surgery. Organ failure is sometimes handled by a team of best doctor for acute pancreatitis in medical care.

Another vital part of pancreatitis treatment is to get rid of the reason for this condition. If your pancreatitis is caused by gallstones, A pancreas stone specialist can treat it, too. People with pancreatitis from alcohol use must give up alcohol to keep from getting this problem again.

  • Chronic pancreatitis is the long-standing inflammation of the pancreas. Calcium stones and cysts may develop in your pancreas, which can block the pancreatic duct that carries digestive enzymes and juices to the small intestine. The blockage may lower the levels of pancreatic enzymes and hormones, which will make it harder for your body to digest food and regulate your blood sugar. This may cause health problems, including malnutrition and diabetes.
  • At first, you may not notice any symptoms. Changes in your pancreas can become quite advanced before you begin to feel unwell. When symptoms occur, they may include:

    – Pain in your upper abdomen

    – Diarrhoea

    – Fatty stools, which are loose, pale, and don’t flush away easily

    – Nausea and vomiting

    – Shortness of breath

    – Unexplained weight loss

    – Excessive thirst and fatigue

    – You may experience more severe symptoms as the disease progresses, such as:

    – Pancreatic fluids in your abdomen

    – Jaundice, which is characterised by a yellowish discolouration in your eyes and skin

    – Internal bleeding

    – Intestinal blockage

Painful episodes can last for hours or even days. Some people find that eating or drinking can make their pain worse. As the disease progresses, the pain may become constant.

There are numerous different causes of chronic pancreatitis. The most common cause is long-term alcohol abuse. Approximately 70 percent of cases are linked to alcohol consumption.
Other causes include:
– Autoimmune disease, which occurs when your body mistakenly attacks your healthy cells and tissues
– Cystic fibrosis
– Genetic mutations
– High blood levels of calcium, which is called hypercalcemia
– High level of triglyceride fats in your blood, which is called hypertriglyceridemia
– Idiopathic, when the cause is unknown (as per pancreas stone doctor)

  • There are different pancreatic duct stone treatment options for management of chronic pancreatitis such as medical measures, therapeutic endoscopy and surgery. The pancreatic stone removal surgery is usually provided by a chronic pancreatitis specialist doctor also called pancreas stone doctor.

Chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic duct stone treatment is directed, when possible, to the underlying cause, and to relieve pain and malabsorption.

Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus may occur and need long-term insulin therapy.

The abdominal pain can be very severe and require high doses of analgesics , sometimes including opiates . Alcohol cessation and dietary modifications ( low-fat diet ) are important to manage pain and slow the calcific process.

Antioxidants may help but it is unclear if the benefits are meaningful.
