Understanding Retroperitoneal Sarcoma (RPS)
Retroperitoneal sarcoma (RPS) is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the abdominal cavity. Its complex location makes surgical treatment highly challenging. This study explores the benefits of using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to improve surgical outcomes for RPS patients.

Study Overview
Researchers conducted a study involving 251 patients who underwent surgery for RPS. Among them, 46 patients had surgeries guided by 3D-printed models, while 205 patients underwent traditional surgeries using standard imaging techniques. The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of these two methods in improving surgical outcomes.

Key Findings

  1. Shorter Surgery Time: Surgeries guided by 3D-printed models had a median operative time of 186.5 minutes, significantly shorter than the 210 minutes for traditional surgeries.
  2. Reduced Blood Loss: Patients in the 3D group experienced less blood loss during surgery (300.0 mL) compared to the control group (375.0 mL).
  3. Shorter Hospital Stay: The 3D group had a median postoperative hospital stay of 11 days, compared to 14 days for the control group.
  4. Fewer Complications: The rate of postoperative complications was lower in the 3D group (18.1%) compared to the control group (36.6%).

Conclusion
The use of 3D printing technology in RPS surgery offers significant benefits, including shorter operative times, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and fewer postoperative complications. These findings suggest that 3D-printed models can greatly enhance surgical planning and execution, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
