A recent study conducted within the French E3N-Générations cohort (1990–2011) explored the link between long-term exposure to air pollution and breast cancer risk. Researchers focused on three key pollutants: fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), assessing their levels at both residential and workplace addresses.

Key Findings for Patients:

The study found that women exposed to higher levels of PM2.5 over the long term had an increased risk of developing breast cancer. For every 10 µg/m³ increase in PM2.5, the risk rose by about 28%. While there was also an observed risk for exposure to PM10 and NO2, the results were not as strong or statistically significant.

Interestingly, this research considered not only where women lived but also where they worked, and found that residential and workplace pollution levels were closely related. This means that even if exposure at work isn’t measured, home air pollution data can give a good picture of overall risk.

Though genetic and lifestyle factors remain key risks, environmental exposure to pollutants like PM2.5 plays a role too.
