A patient had an advanced mucinous tumour spread across the lining of the abdomen (pseudomyxoma). It was treated with cytoreductive surgery to remove all visible disease plus a heated chemotherapy wash (HIPEC), and is now on surveillance. Even disease spread across the abdominal lining can sometimes be treated with this specialised combined approach.
A young patient was found to have a mucinous tumour of the appendix, caught early through a doorbeen (laparoscopic) staging assessment that placed it in the best-prognosis group. Catching an appendiceal mucinous tumour early can avoid the need for major surgery.
A patient had disease spread throughout the abdomen from a low-grade ovarian primary. Chemotherapy was given first, followed by complete cytoreductive surgery with a heated chemotherapy wash (HIPEC) and restoration of bowel continuity; the low-grade type is now on surveillance. Widespread abdominal disease from certain cancers can still be removed with this combined approach.
A patient who had major peritoneal-cancer surgery was given a temporary stoma, which was later closed in a separate operation — restoring bag-free, normal bowel function. A stoma made during major surgery is often temporary and can be reversed.
HIPEC is heated chemotherapy washed through the abdomen during surgery, after all visible tumour has been removed (cytoreductive surgery), to treat cancer spread across the abdominal lining.
It is used for selected peritoneal surface cancers; catching some tumours early can avoid the need for the most major surgery.
