Why Colon Cancer Is Increasing in Younger Adults

A prospective investigation of early-onset colorectal cancer risk factors-pooled analysis of three large-scale European cohorts.

Colorectal cancer is no longer just a disease of older adults. Doctors are seeing more cases in people under the age of 55, and researchers are trying to understand why.
A large European study combined data from three major health studies to examine possible causes. Researchers looked at over 1,300 cases of early-onset colorectal cancer and compared them with more than 13,000 cases in older adults.
The study found several lifestyle factors linked to higher risk. Excess body weight was one of the strongest risk factors, especially in men. For every increase in body mass index, the risk of early colon cancer increased significantly.
Other habits also played a role. Smoking and alcohol use increased the chance of developing colorectal cancer at a younger age. On the other hand, regular physical activity lowered the risk.
Interestingly, body fat had a stronger link with early-onset cancer in men compared with cancers diagnosed later in life.
These findings suggest that many of the same lifestyle factors that affect older adults also influence cancer risk in younger people. Maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol may help lower the risk.
As colorectal cancer continues to rise in younger adults, awareness and healthy lifestyle choices may become key tools in prevention.
