Does Coffee Really Lower Liver Cancer Risk? New Study Says It Might Not

Coffee and the Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Mendelian Randomization Studies.DOI 10.5009gnl250227

Many people have heard that drinking coffee might protect the liver. Some past studies even suggested it could lower the risk of liver cancer, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). But a new, more detailed analysis tells a different story.

This study reviewed genetic data from five research projects using a method called Mendelian randomization.

This type of research looks at whether certain habits—like drinking coffee—are truly linked to disease, by using genetics to avoid bias or outside influences.

The results showed no clear link between coffee and a lower risk of liver cancer. People with genes linked to higher coffee intake didn’t have a significantly lower risk of developing liver cancer than others.

This suggests earlier studies might have overestimated coffee’s protective effects.

It’s still okay to enjoy your coffee, and it may have other health benefits. But based on this research, we shouldn’t rely on coffee to prevent liver cancer.

Liver cancer risk is best managed by avoiding hepatitis infections, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and managing diabetes or fatty liver disease.

Talk to your doctor if you’re concerned about your liver health.
