A new study from the Netherlands shows that your income level may affect how and when colon cancer is found, the treatment you get, and your chances of survival. The study looked at over 62,000 people with stage I–III colon cancer.

People with higher incomes were more likely to have their cancer found early through screening. About one-third of people with higher incomes had their cancer found this way, but only 23% of lower-income patients did. Early detection through screening often means easier treatment and better results.

When it came to treatment, higher-income patients were also more likely to get chemotherapy after surgery, especially for stage III cancer. They also had fewer complications in the hospital.

Over five years, survival rates were slightly better for people with higher incomes. Around 89% of them were still alive after five years, compared to 86% for lower-income patients. While this difference seems small, it still shows that income can play a role in health outcomes.

These results highlight the need to make screening and good care available to everyone, no matter their income. Getting tested on time and receiving the right treatment can save lives.

If you’re eligible for colon cancer screening, don’t wait. Early detection is one of the best ways to protect your health.
