Participation and Yield of Gastric Cancer Screening Programs A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.DOI 10.1016j.cgh.2025.01.029

Stomach cancer is a serious disease. To find it early, many countries offer screening programs. This means people are invited to get tested before they have any symptoms. Finding cancer early can save lives.

A new study looked at how well these screening programs are working around the world. It checked how many people take part, how often stomach cancer is found, and how many of those cancers are caught early.

Researchers reviewed 67 different studies. They found that less than half of people invited to screening actually went (only 46%). This is a problem. If fewer people take part, fewer cancers are found early.

In places like Japan and other developed countries, more people joined the programs (about 51%), and they had better results. They were more likely to catch cancer early. In developing countries, fewer people joined (only 37%), and fewer early cancers were found.

The study also saw a small drop in how many early cancers were found in more recent years. This may mean programs need to improve how they find cancer sooner.

Screening works best when more people take part. The study shows we need to encourage more people to get screened, especially in places where fewer people join. Finding cancer early means easier treatment and better chances of survival.

If you live in a country that offers stomach cancer screening and you’re in the right age group, speak to your doctor. Early testing can save your life.
