Groin hernias are often repaired using a mesh to support the muscle. This method is safe and widely used. But sometimes, the body reacts to the mesh, or an infection happens, and the mesh must be removed. A large study from Sweden looked at how often this happens and who is more at risk.

The researchers studied more than 360,000 groin hernia surgeries done over 30 years. Only 211 people—about 1 in every 1,700—needed another surgery to remove the mesh. That means mesh removal is very rare.

Still, some people were more likely to need mesh removal. Women, younger patients, those who had emergency surgery, or those who had certain types of mesh (like mesh plugs) had a higher chance. Women were nearly 3 times more likely to need the mesh removed than men.

This study helps reassure most people that mesh hernia repairs are safe and usually long-lasting. But it also shows which patients may need extra care or follow-up.

If you’re planning hernia surgery, talk with your doctor about the type of mesh and your personal risks.
