Liver Cancer Treatment May Work Differently Depending on the Cause

A major new study shows that the cause of liver cancer can affect how well treatments work. This matters for people with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer.

Researchers looked at results from 29 clinical trials involving over 18,000 patients. They compared how different treatments worked depending on whether the liver cancer was caused by hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or something else—like alcohol use or fatty liver.

They found that certain drug combinations worked better for some groups. The best results for people with hepatitis B or C came from a treatment called atezolizumab plus bevacizumab. These patients lived longer with this therapy than with others.

But for people whose liver cancer was not caused by a virus, this same treatment worked less well. Another treatment approach, known as STRIDE (a combination of immunotherapy drugs), appeared to be more helpful in those cases.

The study also showed that some treatments worked equally well regardless of the cause of the cancer, like immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) alone.

This information can help doctors choose the right treatment based on how the cancer developed. If you or a loved one is facing liver cancer, ask your doctor whether the cause of the cancer may affect which treatment is best.
