Stool DNA Test May Be More Accurate Than FIT for Colon Cancer Screening

Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the United States. Early detection saves lives, which is why screening tests are so important. Two common non-invasive options are the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) and the multi-target stool DNA test (mt-sDNA).

A new study reviewed data from 55 studies to see how well these tests work. The analysis compared their ability to find both colon cancer and precancerous growths.

The results showed that the next-generation stool DNA test had a very high accuracy for detecting colon cancer, finding about 94 out of 100 cases. FIT found about 72 out of 100 cases. When it came to precancerous growths, the stool DNA test detected almost twice as many advanced precancerous lesions as FIT (46% vs 22%).

FIT had a small advantage in avoiding false positives, meaning it was slightly better at ruling out cancer in people who were healthy. Still, the higher ability of stool DNA testing to catch cancer and precancerous changes makes it a powerful tool for prevention.

This study suggests that the stool DNA test may be the stronger choice for many people, especially those at higher risk. Colonoscopy remains the most reliable test, but stool-based tests give patients an easier option when colonoscopy is not possible or not preferred.

Patients should speak with their doctor about which screening method fits their risk, age, and health best.
