Many people who have surgery for rectal cancer face ongoing bowel problems. This is called Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS). It can include sudden urges to go to the bathroom, leaking stool, and needing to use the toilet often. These issues can make it hard to enjoy daily life and can affect your mental health.

A new review looked at six studies and found that pelvic floor rehabilitation can help. This treatment uses exercises to strengthen the muscles that control bowel movements. Patients who did this therapy had better bowel function and felt better overall.

Some people may still need surgery if their problems are very severe, but this is usually the last option. Surgery comes with more risks and can affect mental health. The review shows that there isn’t one answer that works for everyone. Doctors need to make a plan that fits each person.

If you are dealing with bowel problems after rectal cancer surgery, talk to your doctor early. Ask about options like pelvic floor therapy.
