Recovering after esophageal surgery can take time. A recent study highlights how Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols improve the healing process.

ERAS is a structured care plan designed to help patients recover quickly after surgery. This study looked at 850 patients across six trials. It found that patients using ERAS had fewer complications, such as lung issues, and spent fewer days in the hospital.

Another benefit of ERAS is quicker return to normal digestion, marked by passing gas sooner after surgery. Other complications, like heart problems or wound healing issues, were similar between ERAS and standard care groups.

If you or a loved one is planning esophageal surgery, consider discussing ERAS protocols with your healthcare team. They may help ensure a smoother recovery and a shorter hospital stay.
