Non-tobacco products (NTP) like betel nut or smokeless alternatives to tobacco are becoming more common. But did you know they might be linked to cancer? A recent study reviewed many scientific papers and found that using NTP could increase the risk of oral, esophageal, and pharyngeal cancers. It also showed a connection to oral conditions that can lead to cancer later.

The research looked at over 132,000 people and found that NTP use increases the risk of oral cancer by five times and esophageal cancer by three times. The impact is especially noticeable in countries like India, where NTP contributes significantly to cancer cases.

This study highlights why awareness is important. If you use NTP, consider the risks and speak to your doctor. Educating people and making informed choices can help reduce the burden of these cancers.
