Ulcerative colitis can affect only the rectum or the left side of the colon or the entire part of large intestine. A single person can have different types of colitis during his life time. The distribution of the disease may change after the treatment.
Symptoms of ulcerative colitis include pain abdomen which is crampy in nature & associated with increased stool frequency. Patient also feels urge to defecate often but passes mucus stained with blood. Fever & weight loss can be the accompanying symptoms.
Acute severe ulcerative colitis can cause bleeding & sometime intestinal perforation. Long standing ulcerative if untreated leads to intestinal narrowing in the active segment of Ulcerative colitis, more common on the left side. Long standing untreated ulcerative colitis can be a seed for colon cancer development.
First time diagnosis of ulcerative colitis depends upon taking a biopsy from the intestinal mucosa with help of colonoscopy. Colonoscope is a small diameter tube with a camera on its tip, that helps specialist to examine the inner linings of the large intestine.
Ulcerative colitis not responding to medical management will require surgical removal. During the operation, entire colon is removed & a pouch is created from the small intestine to replace the rectum. The most common variety of pouch is J pouch, which is created with the the surgical staplers & joined with the anus with help of a circular surgical stapler.
