Patients with Achalasia Cardia face two issues. First is tightening of the valve which is present at the lower end of the food pipe. Second is the reduced or absent peristalsis in the body of the food pipe.
Endoscope is a small tube with camera passed down the food-pipe to examine the inner linings of food-pipe & stomach. It can also detect the valve & the hiatal hernia. The procedure takes 5 minutes.
pH metry is a test in which a probe is placed down the food pipe to monitor acid reflux. It has to be performed for 24 hours. After the completion of the test, the readings are taken and a score is generated which helps the GERD specialist understand the quantity & quality of acid reflux.
Manometry is a test in which a small probe is passed into food pipe. The probe is connected to the computer software. The operator will ask the patient to swallow few sips of water during the procedure. This will create few graphs inside the computer. The graph will depict the pressure generated within the food pipe & hence the problems with the function of the food-pipe & the valve.
Achalasia is a condition that affects the oesophagus. The oesophagus or food-pipe is a tube that moves food from the mouth to the abdomen. At the lower end of the oesophagus, where it connects to the stomach(tummy), there’s a muscle known as the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Once the LES tightens, food cannot move from the oesophagus into the abdomen. once the LES relaxes, food will move from the oesophagus into the abdomen.
When individuals have achalasia:
Muscles of food-pipe doesn’t work normally
The LES does not relax, therefore food cannot get into the stomach(abdomen)
The most common symptom of achalasia is difficulty in swallowing food and drinks. alternative symptoms will include:
Swasth Parivar: twice a month, practical advice on recovery, diet and warning signs. No advertising. Stop any time.
