What I operate on

Piles, fissure, fistula
Treated with medicines first. When an operation is needed, it is done with attention to continence.
Rectal prolapse
The rectum is lifted back and fixed, by laparoscopy or through the perineum.
Colon and rectal cancer
Resection with the lymph nodes, keeping the natural passage when the tumour allows.
Diverticulitis and obstruction
Early antibiotics and rest for most; surgery for abscess, perforation or repeated attacks.

Bleeding is often put down to piles. A colonoscopy sorts out which one it is.

Questions patients ask

Is bleeding always piles?

No. Piles are common, but bleeding with a change in motions can be a polyp or cancer. A colonoscopy answers it.

Will I need a bag after rectal cancer surgery?

Only when the tumour is too low to join the bowel safely, and sometimes only for a few months.

Do fistulas need surgery?

Most do, because they do not close by themselves. The type of fistula decides the operation.

Can I send my reports first?

Yes, by WhatsApp. Colonoscopy, MRI and CT help me tell you what to expect.
